After a year of research and investigations, a group of Chinese researchers has found an underwater blue sinkhole that is the deepest in world, having a depth of at least 987 feet below its surface.

The profundity of the newly theorized deepest hole has left the previous record holder hole of Bahamas, by over 300 feet, claims the Chinese news agency, Xinhua.

Blue holes are actually underwater caves that appear to have a deep blue color. However, the color is mainly because of the darkness inside the cave. Come whatever may, these blue holes look beautiful and are not less than any mystery for the mankind.

The Chinese researchers have been studying the Dragon Hole, which is also known as Longdong, with the help of Sansha Ship Course Research Institute, since August 2015.

“According to Chinese legends, this Dragon Hole is like an eye in the South China Sea, and it is exactly where the Monkey King, during his trip to the West, got the hold of his golden cudgel. It is a story that was published in 1500s, and is regarded as one of the greatest works in the Chinese literature.”

As per the findings of the researchers, the underwater sinkhole is 426 feet wide and is as deep as the length of Eiffel Tower. The team also found many new species of fishes and existence of a rich marine life in this underwater cave.

After the findings, the sinkhole has got a new name ‘Sansha Yongle Blue Hole’, publicized the city government of Sansha.
