Washington: It seems like Donald Trump is aggressively considering the immigration policies to keep out the illegal immigrants residing in the United States. The issue was highlighted when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Tuesday laid out the plan for enforcement of immigration laws. Under Trump’s administration, the new immigration policy could impact around 3 lakh unauthorised Indians living in America.
According to the memo laid out by DHS, refugees who have not been living continuously in the US for 2 years or who are impermissible are at the higher risk of deportation, unless he is an unaccompanied minor, has fear of torture in home country, intends to apply for asylum or claims to be a legal immigrant.
During his entire presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly opposed the admission of immigrants in US. In August 2016, he seemed to soften his stand for people who entered the country violating the laws. But again by the end of month, on 31 August, 2016 he reaffirmed his harsh stance on immigration. On January 27, protests in United States and worldwide happened following his order of suspending refugees for 120 days in the country. President’s immigration policies have always been questioned by several experts for its effectiveness and this time there hardly seems to be an escape for the undocumented immigrants.
Although, the DHS officials have confirmed that expulsion of people will not happen immediately, Trump’s policies continue to provoke fear in the minds of immigrants.
