World's heaviest woman sheds 108kg in Indian hospital

36-year old Egyptian woman Eman Ahmed is no longer known as ‘World’s heaviest woman’. After regular sessions of physiotherapy and following liquid diet at a hospital in Mumbai, she was able to cut off 108 kg from her body and that too in just 21 days. Not only this, Dr Lakdawala treating her has also not ruled out the need of a weight loss surgery, known as bariatric surgery for further reduction of weight from her body. Now that Eman can at least sit up on her known, the next challenge for the doctor is to stand her on feet. The medical team is hoping for another extraordinary achievement in the case, wherein Eman can lose 50kg in 25 days if the operation goes well. The surgery will happen once the test reports are out which can also help the team in examining the disease she has been carrying for so long.

Weighed 5kg at birth, Eman has never been to school and it is in the last 25 years that she has stepped out of the house to receive medical aid. Her journey has been very difficult throughout. ‘500 kg’ Eman Ahmed was disheartened when there was no response from the weight-reduction treatment she was getting in Egypt. The family then decided to visit India for treatment. After Eman’s visa was rejected, her Doctor Muffazal Lakdawala pleaded to External Affairs Minister on Twitter and it was Sushma Swaraj who initiated the social media campaign and helped her in getting the visa. “Thanks for bringing this to my notice. We will definitely help her”, Sushma tweeted.

The doctors have suggested to send Eman back to Alexandria after the surgery where she would be kept under observation until the next procedure. So far, the hospital has received help of 60 lakh through crowd-sourcing.
