New Delhi: The incumbent chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh tendered his resignation to the president on Monday and with this, speculations are rife that BJP’s candidate Nongthombam Biren Singh would become the new chief minister of Manipur. If that happens, he would be the first BJP chief minister in the northeastern state. A national football player-turned journalist-turned-politician N Biren Singh won from Heingang defeating Trinamool Congress. He left the congress party last year after tussle with Ibobi Singh.
Looking at the Manipur number game, Congress is leading the show with 28 seats and behind it is Bharatiya Janata Party at 21. The majority mark for any party to win is 32 and considering the scenario, either congress would emerge as the single-largest party in Manipur or BJP-led coalition could be asked to form the government, the result of which is expected to come on today when Governor Najma Heptulla invites one of the parties.
The Governor said on Monday, “I was satisfied that they (BJP) have support of 32 MLAs, but as per rules, until the present chief minister resigns, the process of next government formation cannot be started.”
In this high political drama, since representatives from both the parties have met the Governor, all eyes are now on who would get the opportunity for proving majority on the floor of the House.
